KINDNESS, KINDNESS, KINDNESS. I WANT TO MAKE A NEW YEAR’S PRAYER, NOT A RESOLUTION. I’M PRAYING FOR COURAGE. – SUSAN SONTAG
New Year’s brings out some of the most interesting perspectives on living life. What to work towards. Who we want to become. How we want to use our time. What we want to accomplish, and so on. And liking or disliking resolutions. Or, preferring goal setting. It’s all fascinating.
And, New Year’s also elicits a quiet debate as to “Resolve” or not. Or to identify a word or phrase for the year.
Or, as Susan Sontag apparently reflected upon in her journals 50 years ago, a prayer.
Her prayer versus a resolution suggests the more profound spiritual expression of her desires. And, indeed, kindness and perhaps the courage to be kind, are important.
May we all take her sentiments to heart. Let’s take one day at a time and do what we can.
At Practice Playfulness, we have experience with goals, mile markers (really), and creating tiny habits. Perhaps our personal experiences color the lens through which New Year’s Resolutions, goals, and dreams are approached … and the same is likely said for yourself.
At Practice Playfulness this year, there’s an opportunity to leverage all three ways in which to greet the New Year and all the promises it holds.
First: To create our list of personal AND professional Resolutions or goals around Practice Playfulness (imagine playing more AND sharing our playfulness further and broader).
Second: Our phrase for the year, as it has been for many: “Do Good; Have Fun; Make Money; AND, Be Healthy.”
Third: A Prayer for Kindness and Courage.
What about you and yours? Ready, willing, and able to decide which or if any of these work for you as 2025 begins?
At a minimum, do consider creating a tiny habit in and around the art and science of Play and Playfulness. Your well-being might improve throughout the year!
Be Kind. Have Courage!
