Sometimes we forget we are human beings not human doings. Too often we’re on autopilot, filling time with busy work, just getting the job done. Don’t get us wrong. Doing has its place but not to the detriment of being — and in particular being playful — thriving in a state of flow as a playful human being.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, Playfulness /ˈpleɪflnəs/ [uncountable] is defined as the quality of being full of fun and wanting to play.
ChatGPT further suggests “Being present and playful are closely related because both involve fully immersing oneself in the current moment. When you’re present, you’re able to let go of distractions and fully engage with whatever you’re doing, which can lead to a more playful and spontaneous mindset. Playfulness often arises when you’re not overly focused on the outcome or consequences, allowing you to explore, experiment, and enjoy the moment with a sense of curiosity and joy. So, being present can enhance your ability to embrace playfulness in various aspects of life.
Both Oxford and ChatGPT lead with “being” – not “doing.”
Why is this important? According to Maslow “The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.”
When do you feel most present and playfulness? What might it take to ensure a playful spirit each and every day?
